joy rebel interview:: miss funster, herself!

the funsters, photo used with permission

I am thrilled to have Jannie Funster in the house today!! I go to her blog for a lift, a smile and a reminder to have fun. I know you will enjoy her sassy and sparkly attitude!

1. So…Miss Funster. May I call you Miss Funster? Tell us about yourself and what you do.

Hey Brandi, on most days please just call me Jannie (rhymes with Grannie, of course.) But on Sundays I like to be referred to as The Mistress of Mirth (ed: what a coincidence-that's the day I am referred to as supreme being of light and splendor), on Tuesdays as The Bloggity Elf and every other Friday please call me early to dinner. Groannnn. :)

What do I do? Well, I love to paint roosters and cats. The roosters really don't dig it, but they get used to the feel of the latex in their feathers after a while. The cats don't dig it. At All. But my art must go on!

2. How did you get started musically?

Well, in utero Mom sang me a lot of Irish jig tunes and Dad hummed and whistled all the time, as he still does -- mostly Hank Williams, Bach and Cole Porter. Motown hits sometimes. Lots of polka. And my music just evolved from there.

3. I noticed you have a wide range of topics in your music…from needing a man with a chainsaw to noticing the hearts and bones of the world. What inspires your lyrics?

Brandi, what inspires my lyrics is usually the wind in the trees, the buzz of the bees and whatever happens to be cavorting at any given moment through this enigmatic wonderland others might generously refer to as My Mind.

4. Who are your musical influences?

Ooo, so many. As a teen I totally o.d'd on The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Lenoard Cohen, E.L.O. , Boston, Chicago, Zepplin, Alice Cooper, and Minnie Moore. (Minnie, Minnie Moore.) Lately the kettle's whistle, low rolling thunder or that funny little squeaky sound of my bustle swishing across the marble floors in my castle can inspire a tune.

5. How do you make sure you are expressing yourself authentically when making music?

Great question! If I can't feel the truth of a song when I'm working on a snippet of an idea - I chuck it. It's gotta be real from the git-go. I've got 12 news songs pretty-much ready to record this fall. So excited about that! A lot of the new ones are infused with Universal Love and new angles on Timeless Themes. And there's a song about kicking butts.

6. If you had one lesson to share with your daughter, what would it be?

What a great question! I would tell her never be afraid to be herself. As long as she's doing nothing illegal, imoral or that infringes on the rights of others - she should go for her inner truth. And she does. She's a real pistol!

7. What does joy mean to you and how do you stay connected to it?

Another cool question - you da questioning bomb, Girl!

Joy to me means living a smile every moment. I think I wrote something in your comments the other day that I love to sing and dance and skip along the sidewalks of life, as I did when I was 6 years old. That's joy!

Joy in giving too. I have so much to give, both musically and materially. I've been giving away a lot of my books lately. Books I love but have just been sitting on my shelf. I'm doing really good at getting over that teeny little tug of resistance in my gut each time I let a favorite one go (that's the part of me that's getting a good stretching out,) but that's more than overcome by my inner joy at thinking how a surpsise package in the mail of a great book will make a friend smile, maybe even make their day or week. And you know what - the less stuff I have, the happier I am.

Bonus question: anything coming up that you’d like to tell us about?

Have I mentioned I'm going to be a very very famous blogger some day? Can't say exactly when, but that's something that's coming up. Eventually. ;) Maybe when I start wearing red hats with purple sweaters, but it's in my cards. And you'll be very famous too, Brandi. The Joy Rebellion cannot be stopped - yay!! It's a fabulous idea you've got going on here. Promise me you'll stick with it?

Also coming up I'm heading to Canada next month for my parent's 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY!! That'll be too cool.

And going to have tuna for lunch.

And probably some dark chocolate later today. Or a Rice Krispie bar. Or both!

You're a sweetie, Brandi. Thanks so much for this opportunity to share. I met you through Lance of The Jungle Of Life, another of my favorite inspirational bloggers and I'm just so verklempt (ed: rock on for the verklempt usage!!) at all this blogging joy.

THANK YOU!
xoxo

Thank you for stopping by Jannie!!

by the way, the giveaway is now closed (previous post) and I'll be posting the recipient on friday. Hooray!

Brandi, I am more than honored to be here and part of this raging delight of unstoppable light and love called the Joy Rebellion.

Thank you!

And darn, just spilled good beer on my keyboard - what a waste of fine cheap ale.

Brandi - What a "Fun" guest you have here with you today! And she's right, you are onto something with the whole Joy Rebel movement!

Jannie,
Consider yourself connected to joy today - you've given me a smile and a couple of good laughs! So, the roosters and you...not the best of friends on some days, huh! Maybe if you shared your tuna with them (oh wait, that's the cats who want that...). Guess what I'm pretty sure of - that pistol of a daughter you have...she's just like her mama...of that, I'm sure! And, you already are famous...in my book for sure, and I think in many others also!

Brandi,

I saw a tweet from Lance re: an interview of Jannie Funster and hustled right over. Thanks for posting this.

Other than being hilariously funny and very sweet, I love Jannie because of her priorities. She "gets" that life is not about how fast one can accumulate material goods.

I loved this quote:

"And you know what - the less stuff I have, the happier I am".

This is a woman who has her priorities straight.

Had to track down the Funster today but it was worth it - she's on the move as she gets so famous and feisty and funny ....

Nice picture too and mix it with joy and rebellion...nothing to loose - though I understand my spelling needed a bit of a boost today..hope my IT made the correction by now?

Thank you for the interview and I am pitying the poor roosters a bit now? I am allergic to paint myself.

Dancing today hopefully that will help. Oh yes! and I fell up the curb yesterday...made a mess of my knees and hands, but mostly embarrassed myself...got ta' laugh out loud sometimes

"Joy rebellion" -- Jannie, you absolutely rock. Count me in. I'm rebelling for joy, too. :)

And I love what you said, re: a lesson for your daughter: never to be afraid of herself. Such wisdom -- fear is what holds so many people back and capsizes their dreams before they can even set sail. What a lucky little girl your little girl is.

xxxx oooo

Wow, how fun to wake up to such verklempting comments here.

Freaking-A!

Chris Edgar: You're a hoot.

3rd Eye: Gigglies is what it's all about!

Lance: Shoot, my roosters just hopped up and ate all the cat's tuna. Guess I should start keeping them outside?

Jeanne: Guess what?! I'm sending YOU a book. Hope you like it. Oh, and sending a cord of wood with it too, the P.O. charges surprisingly only $4995.95 for delivery.

Patricia: Thanks for tracking me down! So sorry to hear about you falling up a curb. What you doing that for, Woman? That's no way to treat the concrete.

Vered: Cool. I just love doing these interviews, I think I'm 'way more interresting on other peoples' blogs than on my own. Maybe I should just "blog out" all the time.

Talon: You KNOW I'll be sharing my dark chocolate with you, Sweetie Bunch. Thank s for coming over here. And darn-it where is that Quite A Year For Plums book for you?

Thomma Lyn: You more than personify Joy Rebellion yourself. And if I do say so myself, I think I pretty-much rock as a mom, overall. How amazing that we get to create the relationship with our child we may not have had as a kid. Freaking-A!

J.D. "Early one morning the sun was shining, I was laying in bed, wonderin' if she'd changed it all - if her hair was still red..." Blood on the Tracks my all-time favorite album of his.

Lynn: Well, I don't like to brag of course but yes, we have a 50,000 square foot cottage. It'll do. For now. :)

Brandi, you sweetie-petitie. This is great. THANK YOU!!!!! And how are you liking your new shorter hair? Did you cut it yourself?

xoxoxo

Jannie,

Woo hoo! La Funstress is sending me a book! I can't wait to see what it'll be. "How Jannie turned into a Funster?" or perhaps "How Jannie survives despite the paparazzi stalking her now that she's famous? It's hard to predict what the book might be.

It's about time you sent me that wood. It's seasoned, right? You personally split it too, right?

Girl, anytime you want to "blog out", you just let me know. I've got a venue for you. :)
