well I've got good news and I've got bad news

zeus

First, the bad news. Zeus has spondylosis, which is a degenerative condition that fuses his spinal bones together, causing pain and limited movement.

There's no treatment, only pain management and there is no telling if it will get worse or when. And if it gets significantly worse-to the point where the pain can't be managed...well, no one wants to see their animal suffering with constant pain.

Yeah.

The good news is we've decided to adopt him and give him the best life we can for however long we can. He currently has full range of movement and doesn't seem to be in a lot of discomfort as long as he's on anti-inflammatorys/pain killers (which he is) and we are looking into massage and acupuncture-both recommended by our vet.

Those xrays were hard to look at, ya'll. I have a vivid imagination which can be both a blessing and a curse and in this case, it doesn't help to be imagining worst case scenarios.

But it was never a question with Jason and I whether we'd take him. Before we knew what was wrong, I kinda figured he'd end up ours anyway...he and Jason are REALLY attached but this news just solidified those feelings for us.

So we keep reminding each other to just take it one day at a time.

Anyone have experience with this? Recommendations? I'd love to hear them...

I had a Chihuahua with a very similar condition. She did really well with anti-inflammatory drugs and pain meds for several years. While she was on the drugs, she really didn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort. She lived to be 18 years old. So, I hope this gives you some encouragement. Zeus seems like a super sweet dog and he is SO lucky to have found you two. :)

Oh, the poor thing. (((Zeus))) I'm so happy to know that he will have a loving and caring home with you and Jason. I don't know about this condition in dogs but anti-inflammatory drugs do make a big difference for humans with similar conditions.

My daughter was in a car accident a couple of years ago and suffered severe whiplash injury which caused surrounding soft tissue and nerve damage. She tried remedial massage as well as regular physical therapy but neither helped and she suffered terribly. She eventually tried acupuncture and noticed an improvement after one treatment...after the next two treatments she felt great. I would definitely recommend the acupuncture for Zeus.

So sorry to hear this news. You are really loves for taking on his adoption. I have no information for you ... just wishes for Zeus, and y'all ...

Putting a sick and beloved dog "down" is a most painful thing ... go gently, savour each second you have.

I'm so happy for you all that you're adopting Zeus. He's a lucky guy. I've no experience with canine spondylosis but my Grandfather had it. He lived a good life.

Love love love you and Jason. I love that you are giving Zeus a home and love and a great life. He is a lucky pup, and I know you will do everything you can to make him happy and comfortable. No advice about his health, but it sounds like you have a good vet team. xox

You and your husband are WONDERFUL!!! for adopting Zeus. My hubby & I have adopted several pets with serious health issues and we have not regretted it. No one has an expiration stamped on their feet, animal or human, so just enjoy each day. We only have experience with heart disease but in any case it is always about the quality of life not quantity. xo Inge

diva...thank you so much! You are so right...none of us have an expiration date. I love that analogy. And THANK YOU for adopting animals in need as well.

btw, I saw that one of your fave books is 'running with scissors'. Have you read any of augusten's other books? I love him...

He is going to be loved, and that is what is most important in helping him feel healthy, well and happy. He's come into your life for a reason.
