To me, really getting to know a place is not about visiting the sites that are known by everyone, it's about getting on the street. That's where the really interesting bits are...the little quirks and soft spots that tell the stories of how the place came about.

I know it's cliche but the energy on new york's street just fascinates me. I could wander into little bodegas and churches and through alleyways and doorways for days and still never tire of what I find. The textures and smells and variety of people...

New york is a city that's been around a while. A city that's sort of seen it all and is still around, somewhat world weary but still standing proud. New york is feminine to me-the tough mamma energy of a lady that grew up on the rough side and figured out how to be successful. She's not afraid of her wrinkles and flaws...she knows they tell just as much of her story as the beauty.
What places speak to you?

i love this! "the tough mamma energy of a lady that grew up on the rough side and figured out how to be successful"...awesome. i would have to agree.
and i'm loving this question. only i'm struggling to pick just one location. so i will list (in no particular order):
* my grandma's screen porch
* milos, greece
* the beach house balcony in galveston
* mountain bike trails in memorial park
you may notice the pattern that all of these places are OUTSIDE.
The English countryside ~ all of it.
Vancouver ~ because its like 5 or 6 places all rolled into one.
Switzerland ~ Waaaay up high in the Alpine villages.
The Atlantic Ocean, the Blue Ridge Mountains, small Southern towns that seem frozen in time, New Orleans, Montreal, and the little wine villages of Bourgogne. :)
Great post, Brandi! Your image of the old woman reminded me of the Faithless song "Dirty Old Man," where cities like London and New York are personified as an old man, who sings the song. I love that song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGid3msEi6w, if you're curious)
That shot of the elevator buttons is *gorgeous*.
The ocean puts things in perspective for me.
Big Sur California with its endless view.
The peace and tranquility of my bedroom.
The small town of Sierra Madre, California up against the mountain.
Wonderful images! Thanks for taking us there with you through your eyes. :)
My soul sings in Chester (England) with its details spanning over 2000 years of history and also at the seaside in Puerto Madryn (Chubut, Argentina) so wild and open.

great post! i lived in new york for 4 years (upper west siiiide!), and i miss it a lot, especially during the sweltering summer months (sure it smells like death, but god i love the city in the summer...).
i've been a lot of different places in my life (i'm lucky), and i feel like many of them have spoken to me. one that sticks out is Budapest. i was surprisingly enthralled by the city, food, culture, people. it was an amazing three days. highly recommended!
